Some facts about Blue London topaz
- The stone gets its color through Irradiation and Heat Treatment
Naturally occurring blue topaz is quite rare. Therefore, white topaz (in its purest form) is put through a standardized radiation treatment to achieve the gorgeous greenish-blue hue. The radiation process changes the color of white topaz to a deep blue. This is followed by a heat treatment until the gem reaches the inky blue shade. From certain angles the gem exhibits a greenish tint. The color does not fade over time
- Known as the Jewel of Love and Loyalty, popular for engagement rings
- Believed to Have Healing Powers, its calming blue color reduces stress and anxiety.
London Blue topaz scores an 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness and therefore is considered a durable gemstone. However, it also has the perfect cleavage which means it is susceptible to scratches or fractures.
- How can you tell if a London blue topaz is real?
The stone’s clarity says a lot about its authenticity. Since London blue topaz is heat treated, it is eye-clean, which means it has no inclusions visible to the naked eye. If you notice fractures, inclusions or cracks, then the stone is most likely a fake one.
