ABOUT FIRE OPAL
Fire Opal is a variety of opal that has a bright yellow, bright orange or bright red background color.
Precious Opal is a name given to any opal that exhibits “play-of-color”, a flashing display of spectral colors when the opal is “played” under a light source.
Like the traditional opal, fire opals can occasionally display signs of iridescence in very bright light.
Color is the first thing that you will notice about an opal. Red is the rarest and most sought out color. In order of value, the most valuable color is red, then orange, green, blue and purple. However, Opal is usually never a single color.
Opals are a gemstone that dramatically change appearance based on what angle the Opal is viewed at. This is why it is so difficult to take a photo.

Fire opal is mined in the Mexican states of Queretaro, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Michoacan, Jalisco, Chihuahua and San Luis Potosi.
True to its name, this gemstone was borne from fire.
Formed in the depths of ancient volcanoes, fire opal is created when water seeps into silica-rich lava, filling its seams and hollows. Under this incredible heat and pressure, the lava traps water within itself, forming these magical, sun-bright droplets. The fire opal was prized by Mayan and Aztec peoples, who called it “quetzalitzlipyollitli” or, “the stone of the bird of paradise.”

TIPS FOR CARE
Fire opals are extremely fragile, and suffer from changes in humidity, temperature, and even light. However, with the proper care, your fire opal can last a long time. Opals contain as much as 20% water, which means they can get very dry and wind up cracking. This phenomenon is called “Crazing,” and may be avoided by soaking your opal in water for a few hours, occasionally. Some opals are actually filled with oil, wax, or plastic, to avoid crazing. It is important that opals never be touched with any oils or chemicals. It is also important to protect your stone from any blows or scratches.
