Jewellery accessories: the cart and the horse

Like any craft artists,  jewelry makers are focused  on their creations, seeing them as the center of universe. It is quite logical from the point of view of the maker. However it is much better to see your creations from the point of view of the market, the wearer. As jewellery accessories.
Jewelry’s role is that of a fashion accessory. A fashion accessory is an item which is used to contribute, in a secondary manner, to the wearer’s outfit. The term came into use in the 19th century. Accessories are often used to complete an outfit and are chosen to specifically complement the wearer’s look.

So, when working at a piece, don’t forget your piece’s humble role: it is meant to be an accessory, not a principal in the game of fashion. It is quite difficult to imagine which kind of dress your ring of pendant will  match. When I was making this bracelet of red and green aventurine, I never thought there is a dress (Desigual brand) sharing the same idea – diagonally running red and green fields. When I saw the dress I was really surprised.

On the other hand would it be wise for a hobby jewelry maker to be guided by the design of the clothes? It is a different story for (high) fashion industry selling their stuff – apparel and accessories – under the same brand, on the same site. But would it be possible for me to link my etsy shop listing to this Desigual dress sold in Zalando online shop? I am not sure this will be allowed by admin. And, of course, no one buys a dress to a bracelet, it is the other way round. The cart should be not put before the horse.

The only possible solution is cooperation between independent small fashion designers, so that they cross-link each other, for instance, on Etsy.com.
